Superman is the original Super Hero. In 1938, “the Man of Steel” made his print debut in Action Comics #1. The creation of writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, Superman soon became the archetypal superhero, spanning all of pop culture and media beginning with radio, television then appearing in cinema, video games, themed attractions as well as merchandise. With his iconic S-shield-emblazoned chest, Superman continues to be recognised worldwide as the ultimate champion of truth and justice.
The Man of Tomorrow was born on the ill-fated planet of Krypton. Before his home world was completely destroyed, infant Kal-El was sent to Earth by his scientist father. He was adopted by a kindly farming couple from Smallville, USA, who named him Clark Kent and raised him as their own, with a strong sense of right and wrong.
As a young adult, Clark moved to the city of Metropolis, where he works as a reporter for the Daily Planet newspaper. However, beneath his “mild-mannered” exterior, Clark Kent possesses incredible superpowers. He channels these powers into his alter-ego “Superman” – saving the day at every opportunity. Kent is careful to hide his identity, including from his romantic companion, Lois Lane. Yet, he is not fully able to escape his past. Kryptonite (a radioactive element from his home planet) remains Kent’s lifelong Achilles’ heel, weakening him upon contact – something his nemeses hold against him at any opportunity. But, Superman always finds a way to triumph, extinguishing all evil threats using his phenomenal array of superpowers along with the virtues of honesty and integrity taught to him by the Kents.
