Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs premiered on 21 December 1937, as the first feature-length animated movie. Inspired by the Brothers Grimm re-telling of an old German fairy tale, the film presents the story of the gentle princess, Snow White, who the Queen’s Magic Mirror has declared as the “fairest in the land”. In a jealous rage, the Queen commands a huntsman to take Snow White to the woods and kill her. Touched by Snow White’s gentle nature and innocence, the huntsman cannot carry out this evil deed, so instead he tells Snow White to hide in the forest and never return. The kind woodland animals she meets there lead her to the cottage inhabited by the Seven Dwarfs. The Dwarfs are charmed by Snow White and let her stay with them in return for help with domestic chores.
Meanwhile, the Queen’s Magic Mirror has revealed that Snow White is still alive. The Queen, dressed as a wicked witch, tricks Snow White into eating a poisoned apple, which sends Snow White into a deep sleep. Upon hearing of Snow White’s fate, the Seven Dwarfs rush back to the cottage and chase away the wicked witch, who plunges off a cliff to her death. The grieving Dwarfs place Snow White in a glass casket. Eventually, Snow White is awakened by “love’s first kiss” from a charming prince, and all live happily ever after.
