From goldfish to horses and everything in between, Australians love their pets. Nearly all of us enjoy the company of a pet at some stage during our lives, and the truth is that more Australians live with a cat or dog than with a child. Dogs are the most commonly owned pet, with 38 per cent of us indulging our canine companions with cuddles and keenly anticipated walks. Around 23 per cent of households claim to own at least one cat (although there may be fewer cats than we think, as they are notorious for ingratiating themselves into several homes at once).
Other popular pets include rabbits, guinea pigs and mice. These animals are often owned by children, who by caring for these small creatures learn a sense of responsibility and appreciation of the needs of others. The affectionate relationship between humans and many animals originally began through reciprocal need: in exchange for food and board domestic cats controlled vermin, dogs protected stock and guarded homes, ferrets were used for hunting and poultry supplied eggs. Others pets, such as goldfish, tortoises, canaries and budgerigars have always been valued and loved for their beauty, inquisitiveness and companionship.
