In three seasons since Trent Robinson took charge as coach, the Sydney Roosters have entrenched themselves as the NRL’s most consistent outfit. The Roosters have taken out the minor premiership each year, claimed a premiership title in 2013, and will kick off the 2016 season among the leading contenders for the premiership. The Roosters’ playing roster has been the envy of most of their rivals and again that will be the case for the new season. Centre Blake Ferguson made a strong return to the game in 2015 and will have first shot at the fullback role, while 20-year-old utility Jackson Hastings is expected to partner co-captain Mitchell Pearce in the halves.
The Roosters have added Broncos’ pair Jayden Nikorima and Dale Copley, while hooker Ian Henderson returns from the English Super League after last appearing for the club 12 years ago. The Roosters will field a powerful forward pack, headed by giants Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Sam Moa, Dylan Napa, Sio Siua Taukeiaho and Kane Evans, back-rowers Boyd Cordner, Aidan Guerra and Isaac Liu and hooker Jake Friend, while Shaun Kenny-Dowall, Daniel Tupou and Copley will offer thrust and finishing qualities out wide. If Ferguson and Hastings can adapt to their changed roles within the Roosters’ structure, the sky will again be the limit for Robinson’s Roosters. At full fitness, the Roosters should loom large as premiership threats.
