St George Illawarra’s legion of fans was left with great hope for the future after a brave performance against Canterbury-Bankstown in the 2015 finals series. Injuries had weakened the Dragons’ line-up to the extent they were struggling, yet Paul McGregor’s men almost pulled off one of the club’s most memorable wins. It was McGregor’s first full season in charge of the Dragons and under his guidance the Red V overcame considerable odds to secure a place in the finals for the first time since 2011. McGregor’s work continued through the off-season with the acquisition of 120kg front-rower Mose Masoe from St Helens, rising Warriors forward Sebastine Ikahihifo, former Broncos and Sea Eagles forward Dunamis Lui and ex-Hull KR second-rower Tyrone McCarthy, who represented Ireland against Australia at the 2013 World Cup.
The Dragons’ backline is bolstered by the arrival of centres Tim Lafai from Canterbury-Bankstown and Kurt Mann from Melbourne, while Kalifa Faifai Loa returns after breaking into the NRL with the club in 2010. McGregor will depend heavily on experienced halves Benji Marshall and Gareth Widdop as his on-field generals. The two combined effectively in their first full season together in 2015 and possess the skills to spearhead a team that could prove a surprise packet in 2016.
