As construction work and redevelopment continues at pace in and around the Sharks’ headquarters, there is a growing feeling of optimism among supporters. An improved outlook off the field has led to an impressive recruitment campaign and provides the Sharks with the opportunity to build on their top eight finish of 2015. Central to coach Shane Flanagan’s plans for the new season is the arrival of premiership-winning five-eighth James Maloney from the Sydney Roosters and the return of halfback Chad Townsend after two seasons at the Warriors. Both players boast high-quality kicking games in general play and offer a wealth of experience as backline organisers.

Parramatta utility Joseph Paulo will also add experience to the ranks and at his best is one of the craftiest ball-players in the NRL. Former Manly Warringah forward Jesse Sene-Lefao will add starch to the back row while a handful of younger recruits, including Ipswich pair Josh Cleeland and Kurt Capewell and Brisbane rookie Jordan Drew, will offer depth as they work for a chance to force their way into the Sharks’ top side. Flanagan is blessed with backline class – headed by the scintillating Valentine Holmes (wing or fullback) and 2015 NRL rookie of the year Jack Bird. Queensland juniors Ben Barba, Gerard Beale and Ricky Leutele will also figure prominently in Flanagan’s plans, while a highly experienced forward pack led by NSW captain Paul Gallen and featuring Luke Lewis, Wade Graham, Chris Heighington, Michael Ennis and Andrew Fifita will aim to establish a powerful foundation.
