Targeted recruitment was a key to an improved season for the Canberra Raiders in 2015 and coach Ricky Stuart is confident the same approach can propel the club into the play-offs. Last year it was five-eighth Blake Austin, winger Sisa Waqa and forwards Iosia Soliola, Josh Hodgson and Frank-Paul Nuuausala who excelled in their performances. The recruits were among the Raiders’ best – in fact Soliola was named the club’s player of the year, while Austin starred for City Origin and was touted as a contender for a State of Origin berth with New South Wales.

Encouraged by the results of their 2015 recruitment, the Raiders have signed goalkicking five-eighth Aidan Sezer from the Gold Coast, England Test second-rower Elliott Whitehead, hooker Adam Clydsdale from Newcastle, along with former New Zealand Test prop Jeff Lima. The newcomers will add both strength and depth to the Raiders’ squad; Sezer, for instance will provide competition for places in the halves with Austin and halfback Sam Williams, while Clydsdale, a former Australian schoolboys representative, will challenge Hodgson for the hooking role. Stuart will also be counting on locally developed players such as Jarrod Croker, Jack Wighton, Paul Vaughan and Shannon Boyd to continue their development and assist in the club’s push for a top eight finish. The Raiders will launch their 2016 campaign with successive home games against Penrith and Sydney Roosters.
