Diwali is a five-day Hindu festival of lights, held annually in October or November. Diwali originates from the Sanskrit word Dipavali ("a row of lamps”). For Hindus in India and around the world, this joyous festival celebrates the triumph of light over dark and good over evil. Origin stories vary regionally, but in the north of India, Diwali marks the return of the god Rama from 14 years in exile. Traditionally, Diwali was also linked to the end of the harvest, when thanks would be given to Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity.

Today, family feasts are held, gifts are exchanged, and homes are decorated with lights, candles and lamps arranged on the floor in decorative patterns, to help Lakshmi find her way. Prayers are said, and large public firework displays illuminate the skies.
