Before the 2015 Toyota AFL Premiership Season began, there were suggestions the Saints could go through the year winless. They quickly put paid to such thoughts with an impressive away victory against the Gold Coast SUNS in round two and went on to be competitive in most matches over the next three months, winning five more, highlighted by a record-breaking 110 -point win over Essendon in round 14. Some heavy losses followed towards the end of the year as the young list tired, but by then they had shown that the club is heading in the right direction after ‘winning’ the wooden spoon in 2014.

As coach Alan Richardson enters his third season, the Saints suffered a pre-season blow with Jake Carlisle, whom the club traded for a first-round draft pick, missing the entire year as a result of his involvement in the Essendon saga. On the verge of his 300th match, skipper Nick Riewoldt will saddle up for a 16th season, and his leadership will be important for the young St Kilda side, who will be looking to give players such as Jack Billings, Hugh Goddard, Jack Lonie, Paddy McCartin and Jack Sinclair more game time. With Josh Bruce having a break-out season in 2015, kicking 50 goals, Riewoldt will feel comfortable roaming up the field. Having given up an early first-round draft pick for Carlisle, the Saints received pick 18 as part of the trade, which they used to select Jade Gresham, who has impressive speed, skill and strength. Gresham may get an early run in the forward line with a view to moving into the midfield at some stage. The Saints also selected half-back Brandon White and Bailey Rice, son of former Saint, Dean, from the Dandenong Stingrays. Eight wins in 2016 would be a good outcome for a list going in the right direction.
