After a two-year honeymoon, coach Ken Hinkley was confronted by the harsh reality of the AFL coaching caper as the Power tumbled out of finals contention in 2015. In his first season at the helm, Hinkley had taken Port from winning just five games in 2012 to semi-finals in 2013 and to within a whisker of a Grand Final in 2014. However, a generally poor first half of 2015 saw the highly-rated Power win only 12 matches, to finish a game short of finals. That’s not to say that there were no highlights for Port in 2015. Indeed, its best football was scintillating, as its dual wins against eventual premier Hawthorn attested. Despite facing a year without former Essendon pair Patrick Ryder and Angus Monfries, the Power will be bolstered by the addition of Charlie Dixon (ex-Gold Coast SUNS) and the return from injury of Jared Polec.
The club was quiet at the Draft, with only two live picks, but Riley Bonner, a tall left-footer and a standout at last year’s NAB AFL Under 18 Championships, could make an impact in his first season, while Aidyn Johnson is a medium-sized speedster who could also push for selection. With a solid core of players in the 50 –100 game range and key forward Jay Schulz looking to rebound from a relatively quiet season, expect Port Adelaide to be aiming to bounce back strongly and push for a Finals berth in 2016.
