If any Australian car embodied the sensational 70s, it was Holden’s Sandman range of utes and panel vans. The Sandman will forever be associated with the thriving surf culture of the day.
The Holden HX Sandman, an update of the HJ model, featured a range of new engines designed to meet strict new anti-pollution laws. The Sandman package consisted of bold graphics, including a special Sandman script emblazoned across the tail-gate. A host of other design features were aimed squarely at a younger crowd, such as the sports instrumentation and steering wheel, bucket seats and rally road wheels sourced from the Monaro. Optional extras included automatic transmission, power steering and air conditioning.
The Sandman proved a successful endeavour for General Motors Holden, allowing them to lift the price well beyond what would normally be spent on a basic panel van. Holden's HX Sandman panel vans were incredibly popular with customers, who personalised their vans with amazing paint jobs, body modifications and fully decked-out interiors.Stamp and coin cover details
